Gold Nugget 系列於 1986 年由Gold Corporation推出，Gold Corporation 是一家由西澳大利亞州政府(Government of Western Australia)全資擁有的公司，更廣為人知的是其商品名稱 The Perth Mint。該硬幣有兩個獨特之處：1. “雙色”磨砂設計("two-tone" frosted design)效果，2. 每枚硬幣皆由的壓克力保護殼封裝。這些特徵對於其他廠商發行標準金幣來說是不常見的，也因為如此，為 Nugget 提供了獨特的市場利基。
從 1986 年到 1989 年，這些硬幣的背面描繪了各種澳大利亞金塊。在 1989 年的精鑄校樣版中，設計更改為以不同的袋鼠為特色，袋鼠是世界公認的澳大利亞象徵。這些硬幣今天有時被稱為“金袋鼠”。
